As a practitioner of traditional herbal medicine and a leader of Sun Dance ceremonies, Crow Dog was also dedicated to keeping Lakota traditions alive which helped shape the Native American Self-Determination and Education Act. Recorded talks by Benjamin 'Ben' Black Elk (1932-1973) presented to classes of Oglala Indian college students on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. He was the unofficial greeter for 27 years at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Through his writings and teachings, he sought to unify Indian people of all nations. It was with great respect that an annual tourism award was named for Ben Black Elk, born in 1899 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Members of the Ghost Dancer movement were being tracked down sparking the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. The takeover of Wounded Knee had special meaning for Crow Dog because his great-grandfather, Jerome Crow Dog, had been a Ghost Dancer. Medicine man and spiritual leader, he became well known during the Lakota takeover of the town of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in 1973, known as the Wounded Knee Incident.
